On April 2nd, 1996, TV Tokyo aired the first episode of the anime series The Vision of Escaflowne to audiences across Japan. Sony’s Animax channel aired the episode on networks in Hong Kong (a year before Great Britain returned it to China), Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.

April 2nd, 2023 marks the 27th anniversary of this beautiful 26-episode series.

Compared to other mecha-themed anime series like Gundam or Neon Genesis Evangelion, which are focused on science-fiction, The Vision of Escaflowne is one of those rare mecha-themed titles set in a fantasy world. It is also one of those rare mecha-themed anime shows in which a girl or woman is the lead character. Other examples are Cross Ange and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury.

I checked out the anime in 2002 when I borrowed the subtitled version from a friend…
