One Piece’s Anime Series Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The first episode aired on October 20, 1999, and will continue beyond 1,200 episodes.

On July 22, 1997, Eiichiro Oda’s manga masterpiece One Piece began its run in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump publication. The manga continues running and Oda isn’t going to stop, he comments that the story continues after Luffy reaches his goal of being the next “Pirate King.” Being the Pirate King is one step towards a bigger goal Luffy aims to achieve.

That means its anime series adaptation isn’t stopping anytime soon.

On October 20, 1999, the first episode “I’m Luffy! The Man Who’s Gonna Be King of the Pirates!” aired in Japan on Fuji TV. The first season was 61 episodes, covering the “East Blue” arc.

The anime is currently in its 21st season, covering the “Egghead” arc.
