‘The Little Mermaid’ casting backlash reminds us that fandoms are racist as F — K!
Like actors Lenny Henry and Steve Toussaint have said, people are willing to believe dragons are real but are quit to s — t bricks whenever Black and other POC performers are cast in fantasy roles.
Families have Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, based on the 19th-century fairy tale by Danish author & playwright Hans Christian Andersen, to look forward to in the summer of 2023 when the film hits theaters.
That is UNLESS you’re a bigot.
Yes, oh yes, racists are triggered and have been vocal in their condemnation of Ariel, the main heroine who is played by Halle Bailey, who is Black, not white. The saying “representation is everything” holds true because it is powerful and inspirational. The film trailer has already resonated positively with Black families as their daughters see themselves on the big screen. In this respect, Ariel represents all the young Black girls worldwide.
It will resonate for future generations to come.
We can look forward to more live-action adaptations of popular fairy tales in which we’ll see characters who are typically portrayed…
